How to tick off your bucket list over the bank holiday

April 19, 2018, 8:59 a.m.

Woo hoo! It’s not long until another brilliant bank holiday weekend! But did you know a whopping 29% of us will spend most of that time cleaning and doing chores? What if we told you that you could actually tick some items off your bucket list instead?

Thought so! That’s why we’re just about to tell you some of our favourite tips for using the bank holiday to do the stuff you’ve always wanted to do but never seem to have time for.

You may have read our guide on How to create a bucket list you’ll actually complete - but this time we’re going to be tackling the three days off we all have in May (four if you were clever enough to book off the Friday in advance…). You’ll be surprised at how much you can do in that time...and you can mix some bucket item lists together.

Here’s a quick example:

If your bucket list item is…

Travel to Edinburgh

Then you can also tick off…

Visit long lost friends who live in or around the area
Finish a book you’ve alway wanted to read (provided you’re not driving to the destination ;) )
Try haggis in Scotland
Try genuine Scottish whiskey
Dance to live bagpipe music
Spend some quality time with family

That’s at least six bucket list items ticked off already. But way more importantly...you’ll probably have an incredible time and memories to treasure forever with the people you love.

So, that brings us to how you can plan a bucket list bank holiday bonanza!

1. Focus on one big bucket list item as your starting point

A big bucket list item can be anything important to you. Whether you want to go for a weekend away in Paris or stay home and spend time with your family, it all counts. It even works if you want to get a headstart on learning something new such as photography or even a new language. Using one of your bigger bucket list items is a great starting point to get the ball rolling.

2. Think about all the little things you want to achieve

So, let’s say you want to go to Paris then think of all the smaller things you want to do there: see all the famous sights, learn more French, drink Bordeaux, enjoy some Brie...the list goes on.

If you wanted to stay home and spend quality time with your family then some ideas could include: holding a big family BBQ, creating a special Spotify playlist where each family member chooses a song in advance, making up some games for everyone to play, drinking champagne with grandma and maybe even having those crucial huunuu-esque conversations with the people that matter.

As for learning something new, such as playing the guitar, you could split this into smaller categories like spending an afternoon shopping for the guitar, writing down a list of songs you’d like to learn, doing some research into guitar lessons for the future, watching YouTube vids and setting a date for playing at an open mic night a bit further down the line.

3. Ask yourself how you can naturally fit the smaller items into the bigger experience

Now it’s time to note down all the little ‘sub categories’ for your big bucket list item - some inspiration to start your off could be thinking of food, drink, music, your relationships, activities, places and sports.

The point isn’t to cram everything into your chosen bucket list activity, but to make sure they all naturally flow so you can enjoy whatever you’ve chosen to do rather than stress about ticking everything off.

4. Make allowances for any budget, time and responsibility constraints

If your big bucket list items involves paying for stuff like accommodation, travel and spending money then make sure you budget for it. If you don’t have the time or money for either of the May bank holidays then just save up for the August bank holiday instead.

Work out how much time you need for your bucket list. Will you need a few days or can it be done in one evening? And make sure the people you want to do this bucket list item with are free at the time.

Then comes responsibilities. Childcare, looking after elderly relatives, taking care of our pets - we all have them, we just gotta make sure everything’s covered. So that means ensuring you have someone to look after your kids, parents, animals and plants if you’re planning a romantic trip away.
