The stay at home bucket list

April 7, 2020, 9:58 a.m.

Whilst all of us are stuck indoors or limited to our gardens, it is so important to feel inspired to do fun things to help manage anxiety and cope with staying at home.

Find your inner child and enjoy the little things. I have seen many lists of things to do around the house such as decorating or working on the garden. But at time like this, full of uncertainty and anxiety, we also need to take time for ourselves to have fun and relax. Let’s bring the magic back into our lives and tick off an at-home bucket list!

Build a den

Top of the list is building a den. This is the time to bring out your inner architect and design the biggest, best den you can make from all things around the house: sheets, blankets, tarpaulin etc.

It’s the perfect activity for all personalities and ages, it is not just for children. If you are of a serious nature and like to plan, you can take the time to work out your design and materials or if you would prefer, just go for it!

If there are a few of you isolating together, you could turn den building into a competition and vote on the best one.

Finish your dens off with fairy lights and cushions and don’t forget to make sure it is stocked up with treats.

Outdoor tea parties

Now we are heading into spring, the days are getting sunnier and if you are lucky enough to have a garden, it is calling.

A tea party is one of my favourite things to do at the moment and so, next on my list is to have a tea party in the garden. If you aren’t into finger sandwiches and fine china, why not have a picnic. If you want to take it a step further, you could make it a fancy-dress tea party.

It may still be a little chilly so don’t forget to wrap up warm.

No garden? No problemo, fling open a window and gather your favourite nibbles together. If you are isolating, you could have a video call with a friend and take your tea together.

Baking competition

Turn your kitchen into a scene out of the Great British Bake Off!

Grab a recipe and turn it into a competition. If you are in short supply of bread: why not bake some? If you have a sweet tooth, cakes it is! What you bake is completely up to you.

Leftovers? As if! However, if you do have fantastic self-control and manage to save some of your treats, pop them in the freezer for any impromptu tea parties you may have!

Camp in the garden

I think this is a great one if you have little ones at home who want to go on an adventure. Maybe your holiday plans have been cancelled or you are fed up of looking at the same four walls.

Camping in the garden is such a simple thing to do and will keep the kids occupied for a little while.

Stick your tent up, gather your sleeping bags, pillows and torch and head out for a little getaway in the garden. Fingers crossed it will tire the kids out!

Please note this activity is not only for children, adults can enjoy it too.

No garden, no tent? See den!

Have a fancy dinner

For many, a date night as a couple or a family dinner out is an important occasion in their monthly or weekly schedule. Being stuck at home doesn’t mean you are unable to have a special dinner.

Why not get all dressed up in your favourite dress or suit and turn dinner into a special moment.

You could dress the table with your best china and candles or have a fairy light dinner out on the patio. Keep it interesting but most importantly make it an event to remember.

This even works with beans on toast.

Stay up and watch the sunrise

Have you ever had one of those nights where you stay up all night talking and then get to watch the sunrise? They are the kind of nights you remember.

Allocate a night where you don’t have any plans for the next day and enjoy each other’s company. Take some time to relax and enjoy the beauty of the sunrise.

Put on a show

Show off your talents and put on a show. Anything goes, singing, dancing, acting, puppet show, musical instrument. Pull out all the stops to entertain each other!

Roast marshmallows around a fire pit

If you own a fire pit, Spring is the perfect time to use it! Evenings outdoors bring a sense of hope for longer evenings and summer.

You could just sit around the fire pit and enjoy time together but why not introduce some marshmallows! Roast them around the fire with family.

Stargaze

There is something very magical about looking up into the night sky. With fewer planes and warmer weather, the skies may just clear to allow some premium star gazing. You could lie on a blanket in the garden and try and spot a shooting star or satellite.

If you are serious about it, you could try and spot constellations or make up your own for a bit of fun!

The longer you look, the more you will see.

This time is a great opportunity to step back, make memories and enjoy the small things.
